11 Sneakers That Are Totally Office-Appropriate – Men’s Journal

While work dress codes can become more lax in summer, there’s still an unspoken code that office sneakers lucky enough to make it to the workplace should be appropriate — that means no holes, minimal scuffs, and an avoidance of bright colors and crazy designs (with a few exceptions, of course). A good general rule is to keep it simple and inconspicuous; you want to bend the rules, not blatantly taunt them.
With that in mind, we rounded up some of our favorite office sneakers to use. Casual Friday may never be the same.

Converse Jack Purcell Classic Low Top
The Chuck Taylor gets most of the attention at Converse. But don’t overlook the Jack Purcell, which has been a casual staple since its introduction in the mid-1930s. The low profile shape and subtle brown leather doesn’t get in the way, and while the white sole oozes retro cool, it doesn’t attract too much attention. [$55;]
2
Clae Bradley
Footwear designer Sung Choi founded Clae in the early ‘00s and has offered an attractive slate of sneakers ever since. The Bradley is the most wearable. With a refined shape, cup sole for extra durability and a neoprene heel tab to keep your achilles comfortable, we particularly dig the charcoal wool option. [$130;]
3
Seavees 06/64 Legend Clipper Class
A classic of the Playboy era reborn in glorious denim, this is a stitch for stitch recreation of the Coastal Cali style. Uppers made of raw, 11-ounce selvedge with aniline leather accents on the tongue and backstay, lined with cotton canvas, brushed old nickel eyelets, and lightly waxed laces. [$108;]
4
Cole Haan Grand Prø
Cole Haan changed the dress shoe game a few years ago when it introduced the Lunargrand, a dress shoe that incorporated spongy cushioning technology to keep your feet comfortable. But the brand’s more standard sneakers like the Grand Prø strike a perfect balance made for a business casual dress code. With beautiful burnished leather and weighing in at just 8. 8 ounces, they won’t bog you down as you dash from meeting to meeting. [$150;]
5
Axel Arigato Cap-Toe
Made of trim Italian suede and tipped with smooth calf leather, Axel Arigato’s Cap-Toe sneakers are as luxurious as they are minimal. With just a small foil stamp’s worth of branding, they won’t attract as much attention as something like, say, a swoosh might. And when you’re in the office, it makes more sense to blend in with the dress code than it does to stand out. [$205;]
6
Greats The Royale
They may not (yet) be in the same echelon as the big brand names but Brooklyn-based Greats is worth paying attention to. The low-top Royale hits the middle ground between formal and casual and comes in materials like smooth and perforated leather and suede, with a variety of colors to choose from. [$169;]
7
Superga 2750 Cotu Classic
With no room left in your weekender for an extra pair of shoes, these conquer the transition from boardroom to beach with style and substance. The combination of a hefty upper, cushioned footbed, and crepe rubber outsole on the 2750 Cotu Classic make for a pair that can take a beating, but stay comfortable. [$65;]
8
Asics Onitsuka Tiger GSM
We aren’t talking about the multi-paneled, technicolor Asics running sneakers here. These are the simple, straightforward selections from Onitsuka Tiger, one of Japan’s most renowned sneaker brands, and under the ASICS umbrella since the ‘70s. Spring, summer, or fall, these will class up any seasonally appropriate jeans. [$85;]
9
Merrell Freewheel Lace
Merrell is renowned for tough performance and a comfortable fit. The soft suede upper is easy on the feet, while their anti-odor lining ensures they remain stink-free. Extra cushioning in the heel makes long days in the office easy, and the rigid midfoot is supportive enough to make them great for commuting. [From $100;]
10
Vans Classic Slip-on
Your professional career may have taken a different path than Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but your footwear doesn’t have to. Slip-ons come in a plethora of colors and fabrics; we’re kind of partial to the Embossed Weave in black. [$50;]

New Balance 998 Made in the USA Bringback
I know what you’re thinking: New Balance — those are made for chubby white guys. But the cushioning system here is extremely comfortable and the sloping shape defies the stereotypes of NB’s typically chunky reputation, preventing you from starring in a parody commercial about your own shoe choices. Pictures of Employee Attire That Is Appropriate in a Business Casual Setting
The photos provided below illustrate a variety of ways to fulfill the requirements of a business casual dress code. By establishing this type of dress code, your employer is telling you that it’s okay for you to dress less formally and more comfortably at work. As long as your clothing is tasteful and falls within the bounds of professionalism, business casual attire is professional, attractive, and versatile.
When you’re getting dressed for work, keep in mind that the clothes you might wear to the beach, to yoga class, or to run errands aren’t usually acceptable in the business casual workplace. Instead choose cool, crisp staples that can be mixed and matched and dressed up or down, such as a neat, pressed shirt topped by a jacket, sweater, or vest.
Business casual also means clothing that’s clean, unwrinkled, and not too tight, baggy, or revealing. Before you head out the door, check to make sure that seams are finished, stray threads are clipped, and shoes are shined—and never wear anything that’s torn, frayed, or smelly.
Most employees are not required to redo their business wardrobe when they move to a workplace with a business casual dress code. This is because smart casual, business casual and casual dress are the norms when employees meet friends, go out to dinner, visit cultural institutions, and attend concerts—the kind of events where people want to look nice.
As a result, as you peruse the following images, think about creative ways you can combine pieces that already live in your closet to bolster your business casual collection. Chances are, you already own at least enough basics to get a running start on retooling your work wardrobe within your employer’s parameters.

The men and women here are wearing their own interpretations of basic business casual. Note that men don’t need to wear ties to look professional and put together. Dress pants and khakis in a range of neutral colors fill the bill for a business casual environment. Less-formal ties and sport coats work well too.
A basic dress or a conservative skirt with a blouse or sweater is another appropriate choice for women.

These employees showcase business attire that’s compatible with a business casual dress code. As you can see, pants with tailored shirts have the ability to look relaxed but nice and are an excellent business casual choice. Obviously, business suits aren’t necessary for an employee to be properly attired.
Casual dress codes vary from workplace to workplace, but some organizations trust the judgment of their employees and prefer to keep their dress codes simple. If you’re ever in doubt about what you should or shouldn’t wear, just ask.
What Is Business Casual for Women?

A worthy example of a business casual outfit is a well-fitted, attractive blouse worn with pants and finished with stylish black shoes. This trio effectively conveys the idea of business casual without compromising professionalism.
Notice that her blouse is modest and sets a professional tone. It doesn’t have a plunging neckline, reveal her midriff, or contain words or pictures that could offend others. Likewise, her pants fit nicely and avoid being too casual as denim, spandex, or sweatpants might be.
In a business casual office, athletic shoes and sneakers, loafers, clogs, leather boat shoes, and dress heels or flats are acceptable and may be worn with or without tights or stockings as the weather dictates. Avoid wearing flip-flops, sandals, slippers, open-toed shoes, or eye-catching, blingy footwear to the office. Even though business casual guidelines may seem to be a bit lax, appearing professional and conservative at all times is important.

A business casual dress code offers some accommodation for personal taste as long as professionalism remains at the forefront. Even though they’re all wearing casual knits and button-fronts, these employees look well groomed, professional, and ready to accomplish the task at hand.
The image also depicts the tasteful use of jewelry. See the woman in the purple sweater who’s wearing a necklace and earrings that subtly complement her outfit, rather than screaming for attention. Be careful to avoid wearing too much jewelry and remember to apply any cologne or perfume with extreme restraint.
