Kodi Not Working on Firestick? Try these Fixes (Updated 2021)

The Amazon Fire TV Stick has quite possibly become the most popular device for Kodi users. Fire Sticks are cheap, reasonably powerful, easy to set up and use and make Kodi installation easy. But when it comes to Kodi, you’re not likely to get any help from Amazon support if you encounter issues. And because Kodi is a free and open-source project, the team behind the software doesn’t have the resources to dedicate to a full-time customer service desk.
Troubleshooting Kodi can be difficult because problems can occur at one of several different layers. It’s up to you to identify whether the issue is caused by your network, the Fire TV Stick, the Kodi app, the add-on you’re trying to use, or the source that the add-on is trying to stream from.
In this article, we’ll cover some of the common problems Kodi users encounter on their Amazon Fire TV Sticks and how to fix them. All advice is for Kodi 19 Matrix but you might find it works on other versions too. If you use Kodi but not Fire TV, check out our article on more general Kodi problems and fixes.
Troubleshoot first
No matter what problem you may be encountering with Kodi, the first step is to troubleshoot and find where it’s coming from. We need to identify the scope of the problem, i. e., whether it’s limited to a specific addon, the Kodi app, the Fire TV Stick, or your internet connection.
Check your internet connection. Open the Fire TV’s wifi-menu to make sure you’re connected to the internet.
Try a different streaming app like Youtube to see whether the issue is limited to Kodi.
Try streaming from a different addon.

Universal fix: Uninstall, reinstall, and update
A lot of Kodi issues can be solved using a primitive but effective method: uninstall and reinstall. If it’s a particular addon you’re struggling with, just uninstall and reinstall that addon. If it’s a Kodi-wide issue, then completely uninstall and reinstall Kodi.
Don’t forget to update your addons and repositories as well. An out-of-date repo or addon can cause dependency errors and other problems. We’ll assume you know how to install repos and addons, but we’ll show you how to update or remove them.
To update or remove a Kodi repository:
Go to Add-ons (just scroll down to it in the left sidebar, don’t click on it)
Select Install from repository
Long press the repo you want to update or remove and select Information from the context menu
Select Update or Uninstall
To update or remove addons:
Go to Add-ons
Long press the addon you want to update and select Information from the context menu.
Black screen or app crashes on launch
Problem: Upon launch, Kodi either loads a blank black screen or instantly terminates and goes back to the Fire TV home screen.
Solution: This bug often occurs when the app cache is too full for Kodi to run.
Here’s how to fix a black screen or app crash on Kodi launch:
Hold down the Home key on your Fire TV remote
Go to Settings > Applications > Manage installed applications
Select Kodi
Select Force stop, then Clear cache
Back out to the home screen and launch Kodi again
You will see the “Preparing for first launch” message due to the cache just being cleared, and Kodi should then run normally. If this doesn’t work, skip down to this section and try removing the database file specified.
Disable hardware acceleration
Hardware acceleration is a main cause of Kodi crashes, particularly on Android. You can try turning it off to see if the issue goes away. From the Kodi home screen, click the gear icon to go to the settings menu.
Next, select Player settings. At the bottom of the page is another gear icon with the word “Basic” next to it. Click this three times and “Basic” should become “Expert”. Highlight the Video tab, scroll down to the bottom of the list on the right, and disable the Allow hardware acceleration – DXVA2 option. Restart Kodi.
After an update…
If you get this issue after updating to the latest version of Kodi, the problem might be related to the file. The solution is to delete that file. Doing so will not delete your addons.
On Fire TV Stick, you’ll have to download an app to navigate your system files. We recommend ES File Explorer, which is available from the default Amazon app store that comes with Firestick. Open that app and navigate to Android/data/orgkodi/files/ Then delete the file.
No stream available
Problem: When attempting to stream a video on Kodi, you repeatedly get the “no stream available” error.
Solution: Assuming you’ve gone through our troubleshooting steps, this problem occurs when Kodi is for some reason unable to locate sources from which to stream a video. Unfortunately, it’s not a very specific error. Not only could the addon in question be causing the problem, but another addon could also be a factor as well.
There is a chance that the addon is no longer supported by the repository where you originally got it, in which case you’ll need to find it elsewhere. For example, the TVAddons repository and many others have previously gone offline or changed location due to legal issues. Although the repository came back, it’s now under a new web address, so the addons you installed from the old repository may no longer work.
Once you’ve confirmed the problem is within Kodi and the repo and addon are still being maintained, try updating Kodi, repositories, and the addon itself. To update Kodi on Fire TV Stick, you’ll need to download the latest version from the official Kodi website and install it just like you would if it were a fresh install, only this time you’ll be given the option to update instead. Note that if you’re updating from an older version you’ll need to completely uninstall the old version first.
Crash and reboot loop
Problem: Kodi repeatedly crashes and starts up again in an endless loop.
Solution: A few things could be causing Kodi to get stuck in a crash and restart loop. First, try disconnecting your Firestick from the internet, then open Kodi. If that prevents the loop, then the problem is probably Kodi’s URLResolver dependency. If so, click the gear icon on the Kodi home screen and head to System settings. Find the Add-ons tab and select Manage dependencies. Click URLResolver, then Update.
If that doesn’t work, the issue is more likely an add-on or custom build. Try uninstalling add-ons one at a time starting with the most recently installed until you find the culprit. As a last resort, reinstall Kodi from scratch.
No app found to handle this file
Problem: This error message occurs when attempting to install Kodi on Fire TV from an APK file, but Fire OS has no compatible apps to handle APK files.
Solution: Start by following our guide on how to install Kodi on a Fire TV Stick. If you’ve followed those instructions and still get the “no app found to handle this file” error, then the problem is probably with the Downloader app. Make sure you’re using the latest version of Downloader, which supports the installation of APK files. A previous version did not, which caused the error.
Here’s how to update an app on Fire OS:
From the Fire TV home screen, select Apps > Store
Click the menu icon at the bottom fo the Store page
Select My apps > Update available
Click the Update button next to Downloader
Crash during playback
Problem: If Kodi crashes during playback, you may need to adjust some of the advanced settings like cache memory buffer size, CURL timeout, and buffer factor. These are set to a universal default but can be modified manually or by one of several “wizards”. The problem is that many people get it wrong and set these figures too high for the Fire Stick’s hardware to handle, resulting in crashes and other bad behavior. On the other hand, having these set too low can lead to long buffer times. Unfortunately, there are no magic numbers to enter here, even across seemingly identical devices.
Solution: We recommend using the Advanced Settings Wizard that comes with Ares Wizard. It will scan for and calculate the optimum settings for your device. Learn more about how to do this in our article on how to fix buffering on Fire TV.
Problem: This is a broad issue that can result in one or more possible behaviors that all stem from the Fire TV Stick being too underpowered for the task at hand. Symptoms include:
Lag
App crashes
Reduced video quality
Lower frame rate
Slow-motion video
Out-of-sync sound
Long buffering times
Solution: These aren’t so much bugs specific to Kodi as they are limitations of the Fire TV Stick hardware. For that reason, we recommend checking out our other article on how to speed up your Fire TV Stick.
Build-related issues
Problem: There’s no shortage of custom builds out there for Kodi, but sometimes they can have an adverse effect on performance or cause bugs when running Kodi on Fire TV. Almost all builds require more resources than stock Kodi, and most aren’t optimized for the Fire TV Stick’s limited resources. Because they aren’t usually vetted by experts, Kodi builds can also contain vulnerabilities, malware, and spyware that can damage your device and/or steal your private information.

Hanging on shut down
Problem: Sometimes Kodi gets stuck when you attempt to close it. You’ll probably notice this behavior after a Kodi update of some sort. It occurs because of a failure to correctly update a database file, such as when upgrading from Kodi 18 to Kodi 19. Sometimes this can also cause a black screen on startup followed by the app crashing.
Solution: The solution is to delete a file called “addons” followed by a number and the file extension. In most cases, this will be or Here’s how to delete it:
Launch Kodi and select the Gear icon to open the settings menu
Go to File manager > Profile Directory > Database
Long press, or whatever version of this file you have, and select Delete
Overheating
Problem: Overheating can permanently damage your Fire TV Stick. Since it’s probably plugged into the back of your TV and out of plain sight, the issue may be hard to spot. If you notice your Fire TV Stick is hot to the touch, we recommend first diagnosing the root of the problem. Overheating usually goes hand in hand with hardware performance issues. Solution: Assuming you’ve done everything you can and the Fire TV is still overheating, you can try purchasing a USB-powered fan like this one. These handy gadgets plug into any USB port, which most modern TVs have nowadays. Point it at your Fire TV Stick, and you can make your Kodi device a bit less feverish.
Addon shows error on open
If you can’t even open a particular addon, it’s likely that it’s either incompatible with your version of Kodi, or only available to users in a country other than yours. VPN users can test this out by connecting to a server in the required location (for instance, you’ll need a US IP address to use the NHL TV addon or an Australian one to unblock Binge).
Failed to install a dependency
Problem: Some addons depend on other addons to do their job. Dependency errors often occur when new addons are installed or when an existing addon is updated, and the two addons are no longer able to work together. A common dependency error for many users deals with URLResolver. The culprit is often a repository that has gone dark. Users who previously used the TVAddons Fusion repository frequently encounter this error.
Solution: Disable repositories that no longer function so that Kodi will search in working repos instead.
Here’s how to disable a Kodi repository:
Go to File manager and locate the repo that needs to be removed.
Long press the repo and a context menu will appear. Select Remove source.
Of course, you may not have the dependency that you need in any other installed repo. In that case, you will need to either find another repository that has the dependency or download the dependency and install it directly via zip file.
Buffering…
Long buffer times can be caused by a lot of issues that we address in another article on how to fix buffering on Fire TV. But here’s a quick fix that works with many popular add-ons:
Go to Add-ons > Video add-ons
Select the addon that’s having trouble. Scroll down and select the Tools option. This may be called something different depending on the addon you’re using.
Select the options to Clear providers and Clear cache
Buffering can also be caused by a slow internet connection. Even if you have fast internet, internet service providers often frown upon Kodi activity and throttle bandwidth accordingly. If you think this might be the case, we recommend using a VPN.

Unable to connect to source
Problem: After installing a repository, a popup says Kodi is unable to connect to a source or the repository or add-on cannot be accessed.
Solution: This issue is often caused by a typo in the URL entered when adding a repository. Check the source address and ensure you’ve spelled it correctly. Remember to include “” at the beginning and that source URLs are case-sensitive. The repo’s file extension should also be included.
If that doesn’t work, then the repository has either moved to a new URL or gone offline. You can find out by opening a normal web browser on your phone or laptop and entering the URL. If the URL is not found or it’s empty, then you’ll have to find a new source address. Note that alternative hosts are not always trustworthy, so try to stick to links posted by the developer.
New addon causes Kodi to crash
Problem: A new add-on is causing Kodi to crash, preventing you from uninstalling it through Kodi.
Solution: You can manually remove Kodi add-ons from the directory where they are installed. On a Firestick, you’ll need an app to navigate the device’s file directory. We recommend downloading ES File Explorer from the default Amazon App Store. Open it up and navigate to Android/data/ The add-on will be stored in the userdata or addons directory. Delete addons as needed.
Device date and time mismatch
Problem: Kodi is unable to perform updates, searches, and/or play streams.
Solution: These issues might appear similar to those above. If you’ve had a go at all of the other fixes, it might be that your Firestick’s time and date are not set correctly. Kodi often requires the time to be in sync for these functions to work. This is a common problem on Firesticks and some users have been unable to find solutions. However, you can access the time and date settings by doing the following:
From the Fire TV home screen, go to Settings > Preferences
Scroll down to Time Zone
Click Time Zone again and select your time zone.
If that doesn’t set the time correctly, you might need to perform a factory reset on the Firestick.
Addon search function not working
Problem: The search function inside an addon isn’t working.
Chances are the addon developer hasn’t updated it for the most recent version of Kodi. Unfortunately, there’s nothing the user can do about this. You’ll have to wait until a compatible update is available, or install the older version of Kodi.
Addons stopped working after an update
Problem: You recently upgraded to Kodi 19 from an older version and now some of your addons appear to be broken while others are not.
Kodi 19 was radically different from previous versions. As a result of changes to the way the system works, certain addons may not function properly until their developers update them for Kodi 19. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can really do here except wait — if you’re struggling to find replacements, why not check out our list of the best Kodi addons in the meantime?
Get your log files
If you’re still struggling to find the root of a Kodi problem and you’ve reached the end of relevant Google results, it might be time to ask for help on a forum. Don’t just post your problem and expect other people to magically know the answer, though. You’ll need to post the contents of your log file for others to diagnose the problem.
You can access the log file on a Fire TV Stick in a couple of different ways that we’ll explain here.
The first is using the Kodi Log File Uploader, an addon in the official Kodi repository.
Go to Add-ons > Install from repository > Kodi add-on repository > Program add-ons > Kodi LogFile Uploader
Select Install
Go back to the home screen and open the Settings menu by clicking the Gear icon.
Go to System Settings > Logging and Enable debug logging
Restart Kodi and make the error or bug occur again. You need to reproduce the problem for Kodi to log it.
Head back to the main menu and select Add-ons > Program add-ons > Kodi LogFile Uploader and select the Uploader addon
Kodi will upload your log file to a URL where you can find it. A message will pop up containing the URL, which looks like
Go to that URL and you’ll find your log file. Copy and paste the relevant contents of this file to whichever forum where you want to ask your question.
Note that if your problem involves Kodi crashing, then you’ll need to upload the log file from the previous session. To do this, long-press the Kodi LogFile Uploader add-on in step #6 and choose Settings. Check the option to Post the old logfile, from the previous time Kodi ran.
If you want to get your log file via some other means, you can find it at {storage}/Android/data/
You can post the contents of your log file to the official Kodi forum or the official Kodi reddit, but be warned that you’ll find no help with third-party addons there. Discussion about unofficial addons breaks Team Kodi’s forum rules in both locations, even if the addon doesn’t infringe on copyrights. Instead, you might try /r/Addons4Kodi for those third-party addons.

If your Kodi is not working, it could be due to many reasons. In my several years of experience with Kodi, I have run into several issues and have often wondered – rather frustratingly – why is Kodi not working? But, I have also realized that most of the Kodi issues can be taken care of with some rather simple Not Working – Common FixesI will put the Kodi issues into two broad categories – local and server related. The local problems are something that we can usually find the solution to. However, if there is a server issue, there isn’t a great deal we can do about it. It is up to the developers to take care of such problems and all we can do is wait llowing are the common problems and fixes for Kodi media player. 1. Always Use a VPN with KodiKodi not working? Well, there is a chance your ISP is blocking the streaming requests originating from Kodi. Yes, ISPs are known for such practices. But, you don’t have to worry about it anymore. You can avoid it by using a VPN for Kodi. A VPN will simply mask all the streaming requests from your device and your ISP would not even get a whiff of it. Since your ISP can no longer tell whether a data transaction belongs to Kodi, they will not be able to block VPN has been my personal best for a long time now. The update methods are usually unstable and, whenever there is a new version of Kodi out there, it is best to uninstall Kodi on your system and go for a fresh, I understand that you might have added some addons and made changes to settings. It is true that all of them will be lost when you reinstall Kodi. But, what I have noticed is that many addons don’t work with the new version anyway and the old settings aren’t often can install Kodi on Android from Google Play Store, on Windows from Microsoft FireStick, you will need to side-load Kodi as it is yet not featured in Amazon Store. FireStick users can also update to the newer version of Kodi without having to lose the data. 3. Kodi Repositories Not WorkingKodi repositories are the libraries that host the addons and builds. Kodi has an official repository called Kodi Add-on Repository. This repository has a number of video addons, utilities and more. But, it is the third-party repositories like Kodi Bae and Fusion that are more popular and more widely third-party repositories are created by independent developers. There are dozens of repositories out there and not all of them are equally get a Kodi repository, you add a source to Kodi and then install the repository from that source. If any of the Kodi repositories are not working, you will not be able to install the addons or builds from, how do you fix this issue? Unfortunately, for the most part, there is nothing you can do about it. Even when you install a repository locally, its content is still stored on a remote server. If you cannot install an addon or a build through Kodi, this usually means there is a problem with the server. While popular repositories are well maintained, the not-so-popular ones are not. You will need to wait for the server to be online again for the repository to work. If the repository doesn’t work for several days, there is a chance it has been you think there is a local issue with the repository and has nothing to do with the server, you may try some common troubleshooting ahead and reinstall the repository. Sometimes, it might fix the issue. You may also want to reboot the device and check if it makes the repository works. If nothing seems to work, uninstall Kodi and reinstall it. It might help! But, do remember that local issues with repositories are extremely rare. In all likelihood, there is a problem with the server. 4. Kodi Stopped Working SuddenlyI haven’t faced this issue in a long time so I believe it is safe to say that the problem is rare. But, I do remember that Kodi stopped working suddenly for me when it had worked only a couple of hours ago. Every time I tried to run Kodi it would either take a long time to launch or would throw some scratching the back of my head for a while, I figured that at least one important file in the Kodi installation folder must have gone corrupt causing the app to not load properly. I reinstalled Kodi and it started working fine that’s the kind of problem you are stuck with, I reckon reinstallation is the only solution. However, know that this will cause you to lose your Kodi data and your installed add-ons will be gone. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot we can do about could also share the Kodi logfile at the Kodi support forum and check if they could help you with your issue. 5. Kodi Builds OR/AND Add-ons Not WorkingThe first thing I would like you to determine if all the addons are not working or is it just some (or probably just one) the Kodi build is not loading then none of your addons will work. This looks more like the problem with the build and not the addons. It would be a good idea to look up on Google (or any other search engine of your choice) and find out if there is a known issue with that particular ually, the interface of the build loads up as it is saved locally on your machine but the build is not able to fetch the data from the it is the problem with the Kodi build, again the only solution is to uninstall Kodi and reinstall it. Uninstalling the build from Kodi doesn’t seem quite easy as it involves such a complicated process. This is why I always go with a fresh installation of the case you are not using any build but it is the Kodi addons not working, the first thing you would want to do is check the internet connection. Make sure your device is connected to the the internet is working alright, go ahead and reboot the device. This will refresh the OS as well as the app and may fix the case you are experiencing issues with only some addons then this could be a server issue. Kodi addons not working usually means they are not fetching any streaming links or the links they are scraping are not streaming any content. This problem is more common than you would like and often affects the lesser-known addons. My advice is to go for one of the more popular Kodi addons. 6. Kodi Buffering IssuesWhen my Kodi is not working, I usually uninstall the app and reinstall it. It fixes a lot of problems. But, when I run into Kodi buffering issues, I need to do more than are a few ways to take care of the buffering issues including:Clearing the CacheIncreasing the Video cache size in KodiUsing a VPNUsing a CodeYou can read more about it in detail in our special Kodi buffering guide. 7. Reset Kodi to DefaultIn this guide, I have repeatedly talked about uninstalling and reinstalling Kodi. That’s a good idea as it makes sure any missing installation files are redeployed on your system. But, I would admit that not all the Kodi problems require reinstalling. You may even clear Kodi data and reset it to default. This way you can spare yourself some extra can reset Kodi to system default using the Ares Wizard. Here is how you can do it:#1. Install Ares Wizard on Kodi#2. From the Kodi home-screen, go to Add-ons > Program add-ons and run Ares Wizard#3. Click the ‘More’ tab on the top right on the Ares Wizard interface#4. Click ‘Erase all data/Fresh Start’ button#5. Click ‘Yes’ when the following prompt appears#6. Now you will see the following window. If you would like to retain your favorites, sources, and addon settings, choose accordingly. The little grey dot next will turn green upon selecting the item (see the image below). PROBLEM: Usually when Kodi stops working on your Fire Stick, it means Team Kodi released an update and TVAddons no longer runs properly on your now out-of-date version of Kodi.
SOLUTION: To fix this, re-install Kodi and re-install TV Addons on your streaming Amazon FireStick.
+ RECOMMENDED: Your ISP is probably blocking many Kodi addons. Get around it by using a Kodi VPN.

Before You Start Troubleshooting with our Fire Stick Kodi Solutions..
The solutions below specifically address a variety of software and hardware issues that your Kodi Amazon Fire TV is most likely facing. Most common causes of Fire Stick Amazon failure are software errors related to your Kodi installation.
BUT – there is a very good chance that your Internet Service Provider is actually throttling your bandwidth. Bandwidth throttling most commonly occurs to residents of the U. S. (United States) and U. K. (United Kingdom). To prevent bandwidth throttling, hide your traffic with an encrypted VPN (which is easy to set up)
If bandwidth throttling is not an issue for you, then proceed with the rest of this guide.
What Exactly Am I Getting Into Here?

It’s also common for your FireStick to have a more physical problem, like your Amazon fire stick overheating or losing a network signal!

How to Fix “Fire Stick Kodi Not Working”
Possible Causes for Your Fire Stick Not Working and SOLUTIONS for Each:
The list below shows you the most common causes for your Fire Stick not working. Below the title for each are the instructions to fix the problem.
The Kodi fix list below is sorted from MOST likely to least likely to cause your Fire Stick Kodi not working problems.
Psst.. Believe it or not, Scenario #1 below is most likely your issue! Scenario #1: Your Fire TV Stick is overheating. This is VERY common. Get a small fan and plug it in pointing at your FireStick.
Fire Stick Kodi Not Working? Try a USB fan!
The Amazon FireStick has quite a bit of power for its small size. Therefore, the Fire Stick generates a lot of heat and has no active heat dispersion method like air-cooling. So do it yourself!
Buy a small fan for about $10 (they even make fans that work off of USB power these days), plug it in and place it pointed at your FireStick.
This should cool the little guy down so you can stream movies for hours without your Fire Stick Kodi not working due to overheating!
If you’re not sure whether your fire stick is overheating or not, then touch it. If it feels hot, then it’s overheating.
Scenario #2: Your Internet Service Provider is blocking your Kodi streams and/or throttling your streaming bandwidth
Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) actually limit the amount of Kodi streaming data they allow their users to receive. Fortunately, there’s an easy fix: just use a Kodi VPN! Scenario #3: The Kodi app sometimes experiences a glitch or some other problem. Re-Install Kodi and TVAddons to try and fix it.
Try re-installing Kodi and TVAddons
Try re-installing Kodi and TVAddons to get your FireStick working again, using these steps:
First, Re-install Kodi and re-install your TVAddons. These days, it seems that using AGKFire or Apps2Fire is the most surefire way to install Kodi on FireStick. Then, after you’ve re-installed Kodi, install TVAddons.
Additionally, if you have the “newer” Fire Stick with Alexa voice remote, then you can easily install many Apps (like Crackle) from the Fire TV app store. Do this by searching for them individually with the voice remote.
How Do I Re-Install Kodi?
Re-install Kodi by simply removing your existing Kodi installation first, then installing it again. Uninstall then reinstall Kodi on Amazon FireStick using these steps:
From the Fire TV home screen, go to System > Applications > Manage Installed Applications
Then go to Kodi > Remove Installed Application.
Once the Kodi app for FireStick has been removed, simply install Kodi again by using one of the methods on our How to Install Kodi on FireStick page.
Scenario #4: Your Fire Stick is losing its connection to the network.
Buy a new router for stronger WiFi to your Fire Stick
Fire TV losing network connectivity is a very common cause for your Fire Stick Kodi not working. Basically, the WiFi in the FireStick is only so good. And it has a limited range.
So if your WiFi router is far away or puts out a weak signal, there are a few things to try:
Move your router closer to your FireStick
Move your Fire Stick closer to your Wifi / router
Eliminate obstacles that are between your FireStick and the router
Get a newer, better Wireless router for about $20
See Situation #2 above (Overheating) – Your fire stick could lose network connectivity if it’s overheating. So fix it by adding a small fan next to your FireStick.
Your ROUTER could be overheating (VERY common). Most cheap routers do seem to overheat. So once again, put a small fan next to it to cool that puppy down! If you’re not sure, hold your hand on your router – if it’s hot, it’s overheating and most likely causing your network connection to be slow or simply just drop out.
