How to Purchase a Static IP Address
Typically, an Internet connection is created using a dynamic IP address. This means that when your computer connects to the Internet, it uses one of any number of IP addresses, so that each time you connect to the Internet, you end up with a different IP address. When you purchase a static IP address, you connect to the Internet with the same IP address every time. This can be beneficial for a number of reasons, including if you’re using a Virtual Private Network for secure access to files from your business’s network computer. Select the device you’re going to use with your static IP. Your options typically include your router, computer or modem. Find the MAC address of the device you selected. Your router’s MAC address can usually be found on a sticker on the device, and if it’s not on your modem’s label, your Internet Service Provider should have the MAC address for your modem. Click “Start, ” type “cmd” into the search box and press “Enter” to bring up the DOS command prompt in order to find your computer’s MAC address. Type “ipconfig/all” into the command prompt and press “Enter. ” Look for the text that says “Physical Address, ” then copy the numbers and letters that appear directly to the right of that text, as this is your computer’s MAC address. Contact your Internet Service Provider’s customer service department and ask to purchase a static IP address through them. Give them the MAC address of the device you want to assign the static IP to. It may take a few days for them to assign you with a static IP. Reset your computer, modem or router after the static IP address has been assigned.
