What is DDNS and how can I use it with my Dynamic IP …
DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) allows us to overcome the issues related to Dynamic IP Addresses, in attempting to connect to a DVR somewhere on the Internet whose IP Address may change at any time.
Instead of having to manually track changes in a DVR’s IP Address over time, a third-party service will track those changes for us, and instead of connecting to a particular IP
Address that may or may not be valid, we instead connect to the third-party site, and they
redirect us automatically to the DVR at its current IP Address. The DDNS Service is able to track the changes in IP Address by receiving messages from the DVR whenever the DVR detects that its own IP Address has changed.
In situations where the DVR is behind a router on a Local Area Network (LAN), the router
must provide the DDNS support, not the DVR. The DVR will only use its DDNS functions in a situation where the DVR is assigned its IP address by the Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Your DDNS provider will prompt you to select a username and password. It will issue you a name server address that you will now use to connect to your DVR instead of using the IP.
The name server address will follow the following format:
If the selected username is ‘MyDVR’, then the address in this instance will be:
The properties we will need to remember for our setup are:
Username: mydvr
Password: *****
Domain:
When you connect to this address, the DDNS provider will automatically redirect you to the current IP address of the DVR. Changes are reported automatically from the DVR or router, so the DDNS provider should always redirect you to the proper address.
How to Test DDNS | Techwalla
DNS allows you to connect to another networked computer.
Domain Name System (DNS) is a database system that translates a domain name into an IP address. For example, we see, but the computer sees the actual IP address. Because of DNS, we can type the Web address instead of the IP address. If a computer system is having connectivity issues, it could be because there is a problem with DNS being able to find the Web address. You can test DNS using the NSlookup command.
Step 1
Click the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen, type “cmd” in the Search bar and press “Enter. ” A black window opens. Type “cd \windows\system32” at the command prompt and press “Enter. ” This changes the directory.
Step 2
Type “nslookup” and press “Enter” after you change the directory in the same black window. The DNS server settings are shown on the screen. Type any website address, such as, and press “Enter. ” The IP address for the website you entered comes on the screen. The IP address looks something like “555. 128. 485. 32. ”
Step 3
Type “ping –a” and the IP address listed in the previous step in the same black window. Make sure you use the –a switch in front of the IP address you type. It should like this: -a 555. 32 (based on the IP address used in the previous step). In the results you should see the DNS server successfully sent and received packets. It may say something like “Sent =4, Received =4, Lost =0. ” If it received all packets sent and lost none, the DNS is correct.
Setting up DDNS service through the Linksys cloud account
The Dynamic Domain Name System (DDNS) is a premium service that assigns your device a fixed domain name even though you are using a dynamic Internet IP Address.
Why do you need it? DDNS is a good fit for users who would like to access their networks remotely, set up a server behind the router, or host their own website, yet retain the default Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) configuration of the router instead of using a static IP Address.
The DHCP is a router function that changes the IP Address of connected devices periodically. This makes the network inaccessible to hackers or intruders since they do not know what the network’s IP Address is at any given time, but the owner of the network can implement a DDNS service so that he/she can access the network anytime.
NOTE: To use the DDNS feature of your router, begin by signing up with a DDNS provider such as or Linksys routers only support DynDNS and TZO DDNS service providers.
To know how to set up a DDNS service, follow the procedure below:NOTE: This feature is not available on the Linksys app.
Step 1:Log in to your Linksys cloud account. For instructions, click here.
Step 2: On the Navigation pane under Router Settings, click Security.
Step 3: On the Security screen, click on the Apps and Gaming tab.
Step 4:Select your provider from the drop down menu. In this example, we will use the option.
Step 5: Fill in the fields for Username, Password, and Host name. You can refer to your account for this. Make sure to also select the current System on how you generate the IP Address, whether it is Dynamic, Static or Custom. Once done, click the Update button.
Step 6:Once you see the Success status, you have successfully implemented DDNS service on your router. Click the Apply button to save all changes and click Ok to exit.
Make sure that you have entered the values of your DDNS account information correctly. The router will not be able to successfully link to the DDNS service if there is any incorrect information on the account details.
Expanding your networkMost DDNS users connect to their network remotely to control their connected computers and devices. A lot of times DDNS is implemented to access a home monitoring camera like the Linksys WVC80N. Users will be able to access their camera remotely and monitor what’s going on around the perimeter where the device is located. To know more about the Linksys WVC80N, click here.
