Yesterday, I tried to access Craigslist from my laptop at home and received the following message: This IP has been automatically you have questions, please email: I’m not really sure why my IP address would be blocked, all I can think of is that it must be a mistake or someone’s been using my IP address for some internet debauchery. I’ve sent a couple emails to the email address provided, no response… yet. I’ve cleared the history/cookies/cache in Explorer/Chrome/FireFox, but to no avail. I also called my ISP and asked if they could change my IP address, but they refused. I’m having the same issue on both of my laptops and on all three smart-phones in my house (which are all running through the same router/modem). If I turn the WIFI off on any of the phones, then I can access Craigslist without issue. I also unplugged my router/modem last night hoping it would assign me a new IP address but no luck with that either. Does anybody have any advice to give on how to remedy this issue? Looking for a fix, not a Band-Aid like running through a proxy server. Thanks!

I did a quick google, and this is an issue experienced by many over the years.
Some of the advice given is to turn off the modem/router for an extended period of time, such as overnight, and that may reset your IP address. Others suggest turning off accelerators — one example given was for HughesNet users to turn off Turbo Page — whatever provider you have may also have an accelerator that you can turn off.

Based on my meager experience, I don’t think they’re ever quick to reply. I wouldn’t have sent two in one day, but I’d send another in a day or two. They seem to be prey to a lot of technical problems.

Could be a long shot but if you use IE, click the tools star, IE options, privacy tab, sites box. See if craigslist somehow was added to ‘managed websites’ and blocked.

When you do a cold reboot a new IP is assigned automatically.
A cold reboot is when power is cut off from the device for enough time for electric current to die off. meaning unplug the device and wait like 30 seconds. I am not a very patient person, so I usially only wait for 5-10 seconds, which is shorter then recommended.
The article I provided explains the difference between the 2, also the rule of thumb that it’s providing for using Static v dynamic is a bit outdated.
I don’t have an issue with VPN to work and online games in today’s world.
In the old days you could have called your service provider and specified which type of IP you wanted, but dynamic was issued by default.

Were you using your cellular Internet connection, or wireless from a coffee shop or library or something? Each cell tower has a limited pool of addresses, so they get recycled as different people move in and out of coverage – the previous person on that IP may have been doing something CL saw as abusive. wireless connections offered by coffee shops (and other businesses) has a similar problem – all the customers are behind the same router, which uses the same single routable IP address – a previous customer may have been engaging in undesirable blocks are usually temporary, so you may just be able to wait. Or, if you’re on public wifi, switch to cellular. Or (even better) if you’re on cellular, switch to your HOME wifi.
