When you download or seed a torrent, you connect to several other people. This is called a swarm, and everyone in the swarm can see your computer’s IP address. But independent third parties can also join swarms in order to monitor activity and log IP addresses. They can easily log your download habits and use the information for other purposes. So, What Is a Torrent IP?
It sounds complex, but it really isn’t.
A torrent IP is basically the IP address assigned to your torrent client when you use a proxy or a VPN.
But that’s not all – a torrent IP can also be your real IP address.
Why Exactly Should I Check My Torrent IP?
It’s pretty obvious why – to make sure your setup is actually working.
The last thing you want is setting up a VPN or torrent proxy connection, feeling all safe and confident while downloading a torrent, only to later receive a DMCA notice from your ISP or get sued by a copyright troll.
Yep, if you don’t go the extra mile and check torrent IP, the torrent client can actually leak your real IP address.
So that means copyright trolls and lawyers can see your real IP address in the torrent client. And they can use it to track down your ISP, and force them to hand over your contact details.

How to Check My Torrent IP
To start out, make sure your VPN or proxy connection is running. Also, start up your torrent client.
Next, head over to ipMagnet – it’s a pretty reliable torrent IP check tool.
Add the Magnet link on the page to your torrent client, and keep watching the ipMagnet page for a few seconds.
The ipMagnet page will show the IP address you’ve accessed the page with under the Magnet link. So, that should be the address of the VPN or proxy server.
To make sure you’re not dealing with a torrent IP leak, the IP address that pops up below after you start downloading the test torrent should be the same one as the server address.
You can also keep an eye on the IP address in the Trackers tab of your torrent client.
If you see your real IP address there, it means other people can see it in their torrent clients.

Why Can’t I Check My Torrent IP With Simple IP Lookup Tools?
Some people might recommend you use IP detection tools like or WhatIsMyIPAddress.
It’s less effort than the tools we mentioned, sure, but they’re not a reliable way to test IP leaks in your torrent client.
Why?
Because these tools only detect the IP address of your web browser.
The info won’t be helpful for you if you’re only using a torrent proxy since that doesn’t hide your browser’s IP address, for example.
Also, if your VPN is leaking your IP address, or if your torrent client injects your real IP address into the packets it sends to trackers, the tools will again be useless since they won’t check the IP address of your torrent client.
Plus, the tools we mentioned are much more convenient for round-the-clock monitoring. You just have to leave the test torrent in the client, and check the results whenever you want to on the tools’ web pages.
Torrent IP Check – How the Results Can Vary
Depending on your setup, you might see different results – especially if you also use an IP lookup tool alongside a torrent IP check tool.
If you have experience with VPNs and proxies, you shouldn’t have trouble understanding the results.
But if you’re new to this, or just want a clear and simple explanation, we’re gonna help you out.

What’s the Best Way to Prevent a Torrent IP Leak?
There’s no exact guide on this topic online, so we decided to mention the tips we found to work very well for us (and our users) in this article:
Use a Secure VPN
That means getting a service with military-grade encryption and DNS leak protection.
Also, a Kill Switch is a must. Basically, it can shut down all your web traffic the moment your VPN connection goes down. So there’s no risk that the torrent client will leak your IP address in that scenario.
Test the VPN Connection
Using a secure VPN service is a good start, but you should go the extra mile and test it out to make sure it really protects your privacy.
Basically, you should run tests to see if the connection doesn’t suffer from:

Ideally, Use a VPN Instead of a Proxy
If you’re not sure which service to use, always go with a VPN. It offers better encryption than a proxy, and hides your IP address on both the torrent client and your browser.
Or, even better, use both services together. You get two layers of security that way.
Avoid HTTP Proxies
If you insist on only using a proxy with your torrent client, make sure it’s not an HTTP proxy. If it is, the encryption will be very weak (or nonexistent), and the owner of the proxy will be able to see your traffic and IP address.
So, it’s very likely that your torrent will leak your real IP address too.
Usually, HTTPS and SOCKS5 proxies are a safe bet.
Use a More Privacy-Friendly Torrent Client
uTorrent is one of the most popular clients right now, and you’re probably using it too.
If that’s the case, we recommend switching to a more secure alternative like qBittorrent.
We’re not saying uTorrent will intentionally leak your IP address, but we have seen people complain about that online.
Also, uTorrent is more “shady” than qBittorrent:

Tweak Your Torrent Client
Most torrent clients will have some form of built-in encryption. How you enable it varies from client to client, so be sure to google the info for more accurate results.
For this example, though, let’s use qBittorrent.
To enable encryption, just go to Tools>Options>BitTorrent, and set the Encryption mode to Require encryption.
You’ll only have access to a lower number of peers that way, though, since your client will only connect to encrypted peers.
If that’s a problem, just set the Encryption mode to Prefer encryption. That way, the client will prioritize encrypted peers, but also connect to unencrypted peers if no encrypted options are available.
Also, if you use qBittorrent, you can enable Anonymous Mode – a feature which will do what it can to mask your torrenting activity.
Don’t Use Tor
To start off, the Tor devs clearly say you should never download torrents using Tor. It’s not secure, and not convenient either since the speeds are pretty bad.
Also, Tor once had a problem that leaked user IP addresses.
Lastly, torrent clients that use DHT (most of them) will ignore the Tor network since DHT runs on top of UDP. And Tor doesn’t support UDP at all.
VPN + Proxy Combo vs. Double VPN for Torrenting
Since a VPN and torrent proxy combo offers two layers of security, you might wonder if a double VPN connection would work well too.
It offers two layers of encryption, and hides your real IP address behind two different IP addresses. Pretty similar to a VPN and proxy combo, but much more secure since a proxy doesn’t offer strong encryption like a VPN.
So, is it worth it?
Well, it can be – especially if you want to really, really protect your privacy. If one VPN server suffers an IP leak for any reason, the second one will be there to “save” your real IP address.
But be ready for bigger drops in speed. A VPN can already cause slowdowns based on numerous factors on its own. So, you can imagine that your speeds will take an even bigger hit when you’re using two VPN servers.
