What Is Vudu? Vudu is an ad-supported, on-demand streaming service that does not require a subscription. It lets cord-cutters watch full-length movies and shows, and many Vudu titles are free to watch (albeit with ads). It was acquired by Walmart in 2010. In April 2020, Fandango announced plans to acquire the service. It didn’t place in our rating of the Best Streaming Services of 2021. However, those looking to try out a free streaming service have Vudu as an option. While it has some basic elements such as a customizable parental filter and is compatible with most major devices, some other features are absent. For example, it doesn’t allow users to create profiles for different family members and doesn’t really offer intuitive discoverability features that can tailor content to a user’s taste. It also only offers 4K video quality for some of its rental movies and TV shows (a pay-per-title service that is closer to iTunes than to streaming platforms), while its free library maxes out at 1080p high definition. Since Vudu is a free service, you’ll have to watch ads while streaming content, and reviewers have noted that there can be a lot of them: as many as four blocks of commercials in a 20-minute TV episode. Vudu’s library is moderately large, with over 10, 000 free movies and TV episodes, although much of this content is either older or relatively unknown, lower-budget productions (think Hollywood B-movies). Vudu has pretty much no original productions, and popular or critically acclaimed content isn’t well-represented, although some bigger names may occasionally appear for free viewing (‘No Country for Old Men’ and ‘50 Shades of Grey’ have reportedly been free on the platform for brief periods in the past).
